Queer View 2019 - Pop! Culture Theologians LIVE at AAR/WR

You’re invited to join the Queer Studies in Religion Caucus of the AAR/WR for Queer View 2019 featuring an exclusive screening of the #LGBTQ film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. followed by a live recording and breakdown of religious and queer themes by Pop! Culture Theologians Martha Cecilia Ovadia and John Erickson with special guests Sara Hof, from the podcast Bible Bitches and Dr. Marie Cartier, Co-Chair of Queer Studies in Religion for AAR/WR and Professor of Women and Gender Studies at California State University, Northridge.
The Pop! Theologians and special guests will break down the classic film with their usual dosage of sass and the event participants will be encouraged to participate in the live Q&A during the recording! The event will have candy, popcorn, and other fun treats for you to enjoy!

About Us
The Queer Studies in Religion Caucus of the American Academy of Religion’s Western Region provides a safe and supportive space that encourages and supports the interest of scholars working in the field of queer studies in religion and relevant fields.
We are dedicated to the advancement of LGBTQ individuals inside and outside of the academy, giving special attention to LGBTQ voices in the field of religion and the challenges we face in our region. The Queer Studies in Religion Caucus hosts a pre-conference event each year at the AARWR Annual Meeting and a business meeting. We welcome participation and collaboration with all supportive individuals and groups to our mission.

Queer Studies in Religion Co-Chairs
Marie Cartier, Co-Chair, Queer Studies in Religion Session; Founder of the Queer Caucus, AARWR; Southern California Representative for the AARWR; and Co-Chair, Lesbian-Feminist Issues in Religion, AAR, is a teacher, poet, writer, healer, artist, and scholar. She holds a BA in Communications from the University of New Hampshire; an MA in English/Poetry from Colorado State University; an MFA in Theatre Arts (Playwriting) from UCLA; an MFA in Film and TV (Screenwriting) from UCLA; and an MFA in Visual Art (Painting/Sculpture) from Claremont Graduate University. Ms. Cartier has a Ph.D. in Religion with an emphasis on Women and Religion from Claremont Graduate University. She is the author of the critically acclaimed book Baby, You Are My Religion: Women, Gay Bars, and Theology Before Stonewall. She is also a first degree black belt in karate, Shorin-Ryu Shi-Do-Kan Kobayashi style.

John Erickson is the Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. He is currently finishing his dissertation in American Religious History and holds two MA’s from Claremont Graduate University. John serves as a commissioner on the California Commission on the Status of Women, having been appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2017. In addition to the Commission, John serves as the President of the Hollywood Chapter for the National Organization for Women, a Boardmember for the City of West Hollywood’s Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board, a Boardmember for the ACLU of Southern California, the Legislative Action Chair for Stonewall Democratic Club, and a Boardmember for the National Organization for Women (NOW). He co-founded the digital publication the Engaged Gaze and contributes regularly to a number of online publications on the topics of LGBTQ history, feminism, masculinity studies, and American religious history.
John was one of the main organizers of the Women’s March Los Angeles on January 20, 2017, that brought together 750,000 people to Downtown Los Angeles as well as in 2018. He was also a coordinator for the #ResistMarch on June 11, 2017, that brought together 100,000 people to the City of West Hollywood.
Anjeanette LeBoeuf holds a Ph.D. in Women's Studies in Religion at Claremont Graduate University. She holds a MA in Women's Studies in Religion and a BA in Religious Studies, Philosophy with a minor in Sociology. Her fields of interest are South Asian Religions, Popular Culture, and the interplay between gender, religion, and pop culture. She is a Permanent Contributor to the blog Feminism and Religion (https://feminismandreligion.com/author/gradanj/). She is an active member in the Popular Culture/ American Culture Association, WWF, and the American Himalayan Foundation. She co-wrote the article "Intra-group variation in conservative Christians’ gender ideologies (1972–2006" published in the Social Science Journal (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S036233190900113X). She is an avid soccer and hockey fan. When she has spare time, she loves reading books, watching movies, and knitting.
